Copepod Assemblages at the Base of Mangrove Food Webs during a Severe Drought

چکیده
The effect of severe drought on the functional groups that sustain base mangrove food webs in semi-arid areas is largely unknown. We therefore analyzed intra-annual variation assemblages and copepods a shallow, low-inflow estuary Brazilian coast when most ever occurred. lowest density was found April (upstream region) highest August (downstream region). Three main were identified, sorted by spawning strategy, further subdivided according to feeding trophic regime, diel vertical migration behavior. community significantly influenced extreme period, presenting temporal homogenization terms composition, an expressive unexpected increase dry possibly due phytoplankton blooms resistant hypersalinity occurrence copepod species adapted stressful conditions. few stress-tolerant sustaining with seasonal variations observed simplifying variability. results indicate can induce changes zooplankton community, increasing mortality risk and, so, promoting alteration estuarine dynamic.

Effects of Severe Drought on Freshwater Mussel Assemblages
-We examined changes in freshwater mussel abundance and species composition at eight sites in Alabama and Mississippi in response to a severe drought in 2000. Five small-stream sites in Bankhead National Forest were heavily impacted by drought; one site dried almost completely, and four sites experienced total or near cessation of flow but retained water in their channels to a large extent. In ...

Periphyton is an important food source at the base of freshwater ecosystems that tends to bioconcentrate trace elements making them trophically available. The potential for arsenic-a trace element of particular concern due to its widespread occurrence, toxicity, and carcinogenicity-to bioconcentrate in periphyton and thus be available to benthic grazers is less well characterized. To better und...
متن کاملLipids of Prokaryotic Origin at the Base of Marine Food Webs
In particular niches of the marine environment, such as abyssal trenches, icy waters and hot vents, the base of the food web is composed of bacteria and archaea that have developed strategies to survive and thrive under the most extreme conditions. Some of these organisms are considered "extremophiles" and modulate the fatty acid composition of their phospholipids to maintain the adequate fluid...
متن کاملFukushima 137Cs at the base of planktonic food webs off Japan
The potential bioaccumulation of Cs in marine food webs off Japan became a concern following the release of radioactive contaminants from the damaged Fukushima nuclear power plant into the coastal ocean. Previous studies suggest that Cs activities increase with trophic level in pelagic food webs, however, the bioaccumulation of Cs from seawater to primary producers, to zooplankton has not been ...
متن کاملthe effect of e-64 on the developmental competence of sheep cocs during in vitro maturation
in the present study, the effect of e-64 at different concentrations (0.5, 1, 5 and 10 µm) added to (1) the ivm medium on oocyte nuclear maturation and developmental competence of ovine oocytes, and (2) to the ivc medium on embryonic development of ovine embryos were investigated.
